RCMP Assistant Commissioner David Teboul has been charged with three counts of assault, according to the B.C Prosecution Service (BCPS).

The service says the alleged offences occurred on July 2 while Teboul, the federal policing regional commander for the Pacific Region, was off duty in Abbotsford, B.C.

BCPS says Teboul is facing one count of assault and one count of assault by choking in relation to one complainant, and a third count of assault in relation to a second complainant.

Teboul has been a Mountie since 1997 and in his current role since 2024, according to the RCMP website.

High-ranking Mountie charged with assault in off-duty incident in B.C.

RCMP Assistant Commissioner David Teboul has been charged with three counts of assault while he was off duty in Abbotsford, B.C., according to the B.C. Prosecution Service.

He has been the public face on numerous major cases in B.C. in recent years, delivering updates on illicit narcotic investigations and the investigation into the killing of Sikh-Canadian activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey.

‘Temporarily re-assigned,’ says force

Dawn Roberts, the director in charge of B.C. RCMP communications, said in an email to CBC News that once the force learned about the charges, they launched a code of conduct investigation, which remains ongoing.

“A/Commr. Teboul has been temporarily re-assigned and his duty status is subject to continuous review and assessment,” said Roberts.

The BCPS says they have chosen Andi MacKay, a senior Vancouver lawyer in private practice, as a special prosecutor for the case.

The service said this was done “to avoid any potential for real or perceived improper influence in the administration of justice considering the nature of the allegations and the identity of the accused as a police officer in a senior position of authority.”

Teboul’s first appearance is scheduled for Oct. 9 at Abbotsford Law Courts.
